As part of a team including Dr. Kathryn (Katie) Stofer, Dr. Jeremy Waisome, Ayesha Naikodi, Alea Atkinson, Dinank Dista, and Yu-Peng Chen, we organized a workshop titled “Dig Into AI: Unearthing Machine Learning through Root Image Labeling.”

The goal of the workshop was to introduce 16 high school students to the concept of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the context of plant science and inspire them to consider pursuing a STEM career. We achieved this by providing an overview of AI, explaining the importance of labelling and data collection in AI, and demonstrating how AI is implemented in society.

The workshop also featured several engaging activities for the students, such as an outdoor plant identification activity using smartphone AI, career bingo, labelling plant features, and brainstorming ways to support their community with AI.
